[sticky entry] Sticky: Spacey of the Overflow.

I wrote her out a letter which I had, for want of better
Knowledge, sent off to Alaska Where I thought it ought to go
She'd grown crafty since I knew her, fond of yarn, so it went to her
Just for fun, addressed as follows, "Spacey of the Overflow"

My answer came directed, as I confess I expected
Though the picture somewhat shocked me - piles of yarn stacked up the wall!
I knew that she must be there, but I found it hard to see there
No matter where I looked, the yarn pile hid her all...

I'm posting it in multiple places because my laptop that I got in 2013 is starting to slow don, I'm on my second unreliable external hard drive, and while I have hard copies of this stuff, I like having neat versions that I can post to various places if there's a need or want to.

I've got most of the 2021 stuff already done but I'll wait until January to do that.

Unrelated, but this has been a shitty excuse for a winter, at last in Florida. Would a solid week of temperatures under 60 (or even 70!) be too much to ask? (Apparently. Fucking global warming.)

So, only 43, but still pretty good. I got to do just data entry for all of December so I caught up on my regular podcasts and devoured old episodes of my favorites. No regrets, especially since I'm back to half my regularly scheduled days in call center hell (since early January 2022, it's 2/25/22 as I update this).

I looked and looked and looked, mostly at AO3 because of it's awesome tagging system, and the only actions-have-consequences fic I found that has Tony facing consequences was one that took place after IM2 and involved a woman's death during the Tony-Rhodey armored fight at Tony's party.

So this was my post to (LJ)avengers-search, and I hope it's taken well and not seen as shit-stirring: (and for the record, it was written in good faith; I really do want to find fic like this)

Themes I'm looking for but haven't found because the fandom saw Iron Man 4/CACW and started hating on Team Cap:

Where both sides were a little right and a little wrong.

Where Tony isn't a precious innocent who did nothing wrong. (Neither are any of the other Avengers, but the amount of woobiefication of Tony post-IM4 got to be too much.)

Where someone calls Tony out for recruiting a child soldier (Peter), misleading him, lying to his legal guardian, taking him out of the country and putting him in danger. Ideally Aunt May, but I'll take what I can get.

Where someone points out that Vision's energy weapon is what injured Rhodey, and that all Sam did was dodge it, and that Sam was fucking para-rescue and could have done some critical first aid (though maybe he did in IM4 after the fade-out).

Where it's acknowledged that Crossbones brought the bomb and set it off, and Wanda tried to mititgate the damages.

Where someone points out that Thaddeus Ross is a villain. (I'm convinced that IM4 takes place in 2017, because he'd totally be a Trump hire, not an Obama one.)

Where at some point, the Avengers remember that they are adults and they discuss disagreements and compromises and--gasp!--go to the UN conference as a united front to discuss them, since they are the ones who'd be the most affected by them.

Okay, so that was a little bitter and ranty, but I really am looking for fics like this. The only fic I write is self-insert fluff or I'd take a crack at it myself. I know Team Cap did stuff wrong, and I don't expect them to be held blameless, but the only evils in the movie are Strucker, Hurt!Ross, and Martin!Ross (he totally counts after the whole "laughing at the idea of due process" thing).

They don't all have to be in the same fic, of course. Those were just examples.

Gen or any pairing or more-ing that doesn't include Darcy or Loki is welcome.

Or something that's just the team hashing out the scene after Ross leaves where they have an adult discussion and discuss compromises.

Tony was right that oversight was important (especially internationally, how would Americans feel if Captain Canada barged in and started defeating the bad guys while doing lots of property damage?), but Steve was right that they need the freedom to refuse missions they object to (though going someplace where the local government doesn't want them wouldn't be okay because sovereignty).

And not to beat a temporarily-dead underage superhero, but the way Peter Parker was introduced was just Not On. I mean, really? They couldn't have had him be an 18 year old college freshman? Or even a high school senior? The whole subplot with Peter is sketchy as fuck because of the manipulation and endangerment of a minor.

I'm posting it here with these additions because I can add the additions here, at my personal journal, and because maybe someone who sees this but who isn't subscribed to (LJ)avengers-search might have some suggestions. But mostly because I wanted to rant about the lopsidedness of the fan response to IM4/CACW.
simonejester: text: adulthood isn't an award they give you for being a good child (vorkosiverse) ([text] adulthood isn't an award)
I'm still around. I've been busy at work--yay, overtime! And arts and crafts, and moving back in November, and doing my slacking off either elsewhere on the internet, or doing arts and crafts in front of the TV instead of in front of the computer. I want to start getting back to DW/LJ-type stuff, because I miss online journaling and nested comment threads.

That, and I've been thinking about doing a big, image-heavyy post about my adventures in bullet journaling (I started in September, and several different types of notebooks/binders/etc., later, I still haven't found the perfect setup), and this is the best place to do that.
simonejester: text: "I can only conclude that I'm paying off karma at a vastly accelerated rate" ([text] paying off karma)
Dad: Don't worry too much until he gets himself a uniform.
Me: Holy crap, can you imagine the bling on his Qadaffi costume?
Dad: And they're all from the Ivanka Collection!
simonejester: text: adulthood isn't an award they give you for being a good child (vorkosiverse) ([text] adulthood isn't an award)
So...yeah, I'm still around. Online, I'm mostly at Archive of Our Own (orbitaldiamonds), Twitter (simonejester), and Tumblr (krepta-starchild and others).

I got the data entry job in Olrando, so now I'm Walgreens corporate instead of Walgreens retail. I lived with family in T-ville until I could afford my own place and since the end of November I've had a little apartment in Orlando. It's 45 minutes from work, but it was the best I could afford at the time. When all the colleges let out I'll check out apartment prices again and look for better neighborhoods that are closer to work.

I keep meaning to get back into LJ and DW, but if I do manage it, it won't be until sometime in March at the earliest. It's been overtime season at work (which I love! After having my hours cut drastically at the store, I consider the opportunity for overtime--which is strictly voluntary--a privilege!) and I've been working 60 hour weeks since December. I really should be doing housework on my one off-day (to be fair, I did do dishes and clean out my refigerator), but most of it's stuff that can wait until overtime season is over and the stuff that isn't (cleaning the bathroom, grocery shopping) can be done later. Besides, I have a fair amount of stuff to sort out online. I'm going through my email and deleting a lot of crap that should have been deleting years ago, and I'm considering creating a new email account and just using the old one (well, ones) for junk mail and archiving chats with Fizzy and others.

Hope y'all are well, if there's anyone still following this DW and the LJ it crossposts to. I'd say Happy New Year, but it's freaking February and it's too late for that. :P

P.S. I've been following the political news all along like the glutton for punishment I am. Semi-seriously considering learning Swedish and emigrating.
simonejester: sign says "homo sex is sin," word "great" covers "sin" ([queer] homo sex is great)
By "technically" I mean that I'm legally married, but I left Chris in August and have considered myself single since then.

It's still weird, though.

I should go to the nearest military installation (Patrick AFB near Tampa) and see if, since Chris is National Guard, I can get a divorce through JAG. I'm sick of being still technically married and I really want to go back to my maiden name.

Also I'm going to the St. Pete Pride Parade on the 27th so if anyone who knows me here is gonna be there, let me know. It'd be awesome to meet an online friend in person.
simonejester: danbo and an xbox360 controller (Default)
Note: it's been a decade, give or take, since I last read these and I haven't read them this time around. I'm just posting them here so I can send the link to someone else, though I hope you, dear reader, enjoy them too. (I'll reread them myself one of these days.)

(WNTV = Welcome To Night Vale. It's a free podcast. I highly recommend it.)

Now I want to cross-stitch the best ones and make an awesome quilt (that would take a year or so to make). Everyone would want it but after taking that long to make it I don't think I'd be able to sell it.

Also my brother and sister-in-law's baby was born on the 22nd and her name is Isabella. The other day my brother sent this text:

Laying here with my daughter on my chest sleeping and thinking how beautiful she is and how blessed and happy I am.... then she let's[sic] out a huge fart..... definitely my daughter

Yep, definitely my little brother's kid. :P

When an author uses "Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings," and then lists one or more archive warnings.

Seriously! If your story has non-con, or a character death, or graphic depictions of violence, don't fucking use the "Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings" tag!
simonejester: text: wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually ([text] worse if life were fair)
So, JL--the roommate/Chris's girlfriend--her mom is visiting today. I got to meet her. She's very nice. Then Chris came home from work and JL introduced them and Chris gave a brief rundown of his life without mentioning me at all (which is honestly understandable because I don't think JL's mom knows that Chris was/still is married to me), and they just left to go out to dinner. I didn't tell her either. Because I am such a good person. :P
simonejester: text: dear enemy, I curse you and hope that something slightly unpleasant happens to you, like an onion falling on your ([text] dear enemy)
(He and his wife were hosting a friend from Aruba who wanted to see an American Thanksgiving, but since one of the cousins was worried about going into labor before the scheduled date, this year's Thanksgiving was family-only, which also meant no Chris. My dad said that part explicitly.)

Thanksgiving was Thursday the 27th and my birthday was Tuesday the 25th, and Travis not being at Thanksgiving dinner just made the whole event peaceful and fun and entirely apolitical. I'd thank him for the wonderful birthday present but (a)he didn't not show up for my benefit and (b)he'd probably be offended as all get-out, and contrary to the opinions of some, I'm not a deliberate shit-stirrer.

But since he doesn't read my blog (I doubt he even knows my screen name) I'll say it here: Thanks, Travis, for being elsewhere when I was at the paternal Thanksgiving dinner. I hope you're at the paternal Christmas while I'm with my mom and stepdad on the other side of the state.

I mean, I haven't gotten carded regularly since I was twenty-four but still... *grumps*
simonejester: adult icon comic from the oatmeal ([other] clean-adult?)
People are starting to recognize me. I mean, I expected that to happen in the photo lab because it's a place where you have extended periods of time helping customers, but it's happening at Publix too. "Don't you work at Publix?" Or, "do you have a twin who works at Walgreens?" No, it's just me.

And it's SO STRANGE that so many people recognize me, and many of them remember my name.

I'd gotten used to being invisible the last few decades. This is weird.

But not a bad weird.

Just a little mind-blown.
simonejester: danbo and an xbox360 controller (Default)
Note: The vast majority of these were made up by others. I think I posted this back at orbitaldiamonds and asterisked the ones that I did make up myself. I found various lists on LJ back when I lived in Alaska (so between 2007 and 2010) and I have no idea who came up with the idea of making a Hogwarts Skippy List or any of the people who made these suggestions. Anyhow, enjoy!

Useful!

Subject: Fabric Softner

.....Who would have thought?
The US Postal service sent out a message to all letter carriers to put a sheet of Bounce in their uniform pockets to keep yellow jackets away. The yellow jackets just veer around you. And all this time you've just been putting Bounce in the dryer!

It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them.

It also repels mice. Spread them around foundation areas, or in trailers, cars that are sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle.

It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don't get opened too often.

Repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.

Eliminates static electricity from your television (or computer) screen. Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling.

Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of Bounce.

Freshen the air in your home. Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang in the closet.

Put Bounce sheet in vacuum cleaner.

Prevent thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through sheet of Bounce before beginning to sew.

Prevent musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing.

Freshen the air in your car. Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat.

Clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in a pan, fill with water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The antistatic agent apparently weakens the bond between the food.

Eliminate odors in wastebaskets.. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket.

Collect cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract a ll the loose hairs.

Eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling.

Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth.

Eliminate odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper.

Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight. Golfers put a Bounce sheet in their back pocket to keep the bees away.

Put a Bounce sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing them. Keeps them smelling fresh.

And now that you know, print and keep on file or bounce (pass) it around

You know what? I don't care about the circumstances in which he was captured. I don't care if he was just plain kidnapped or went AWOL and then got kidnapped. I. Don't. Fucking. Care. Dude was 23 when he was captured! Who doesn't do stupid shit when they're that young?

Also I agree with the pundits that have said that even if he did desert, surely he's been punished enough already. Hopefully he gets all the time he needs to rest and recover from an ordeal most of us can't even really imagine.

Data and Geordi from Star Trek Next Gen playing Sherlock Holmes and John Watson--as in Beeblock. Someone played by Brent Spiner playing someone played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and someone played by LeVar Burton playing someone played by Martin Freeman. 'Twould be awesome. Bonus points for Troi as Irene Adler and Barclay sneaking a peek. :P

I got a Fitbit Flex less than a week ago (mine's blue though) and today's my second day getting all my 10,000 steps in a day. Go me! Though this time I didn't get to 10,000 at work (lots of walking at Dillard's). I was at about 9,200. So once I synched my phone with my computer (my phone's OS doesn't have the update that will let the Flex update it directly) I saw I only had 800 steps to go so I decided to go for a walk. I asked Chris if he wanted to go and he didn't. JL told him to go and he did. We had a pretty good walk.

You know who I really feel sorry for in that mess? Back in September? The poor shmucks who were operating the one toll lane that was open. Imagining all the angry drivers verbally shooting the messenger in that situation!

When someone makes fun of your religion, or religion in general, are you personally offended?

Why or why not?

How much of a difference does it make if the snarker is a close friend or relative?

Why or why not?

(This wasn't brought about by an argument. I've just been realizing how much atheist snark I've been posting on Facebook and realizing that most of my friends there are believers.)

We left on Tuesday the 8th and got Chris's parents' house on Thursday the 10th. We spent the night with them and spent two days with my mom and stepdad, and then Sunday the 13th we went on to Sarasota, and we're still here. We've been filling out job applications and looking at apartments, and so far no luck with either one. All three interviews I had lined up before we left New York, were commission-only sales and fuck that. And one wanted me to go door to door! Myself! Um, just no. Fuck that. I'd rather do cold calling. The worst a person can do over the phone is yell at you and hang up. I just want something worthy of my skills and experience that pays a living wage and has me in the same building all day! Is that really too much to ask?

And the parking lot was a bitch to get out of. I didn't learn until I was already shopping that the PX and Commissary are closed as of tomorrow due to the government shutdown. I just went to the Commissary for a few thing because Chris and I are heading back to Florida a week from today, and the line was all the way around the store! By the time someone told me that the express line was much shorter (it was), it had looped back around to where the front end registers were.

Now I'm worried about what else is going to be shut down. I just had a small snack (I was feeling a bit anemic) and now I'm off to Housing to make sure the movers will still be packing up our stuff on Thursday and Friday. And then Chris and I are both off to Clark Hall to make sure he'll be able to clear. We will be so, so, so SOL if some key person to his clearing has been furloughed.

And Chris's bonus, and VA benefits, and *headdesk*

Friends, please cross your fingers and hope we're not too screwed.

Update: Just got back from Clark Hall. Business as usual there, no worries about not being able to clear. Small blessings are still blessings.

These are all Supernatural (ETA: and Sherlock) fics, most slash and some with some pretty dire trigger warnings. I'm posting them here so it'll be easy to check up on them. Hmm, I should probably make a list like this for webcomics.

ETA: Many of these fics have some heavy trigger warnings. Please check those out first before diving into a fic!

We're staying an extra month at Fort Drum and leaving on Oct. 8th so that we don't have to pay the huge fine Housing wanted us to pay for not giving them 30 days notice because Uncle Sam didn't give Chris the information and paperwork he needed to do so.

I called to reschedule an interview I had for the 15th of this month (and haven't heard back, not good!), but I have another two or three where I just have to call once I get to Florida and those are promising. I am SO looking forward to being gainfully employed again!

I'm also looking forward to organizing a new place. And I really want to organize it this time. I had plans for this place, but they involved having a basement and the garage couldn't substitute because when it snowed we had to put the car in there and it's not a big garage as it is. I'm not sure what I'll be able to do in an apartment and later in a house (we'll be getting all our household goods at once, and Chris'll be doing his kid on Christmas morning act, opening a box, taking stuff out, leaving it around, doing the same thing with the next box when I'd prefer to keep stuff in boxes until needed and then a year or so later sell/toss/give away what's still in the boxes after that time) but I'm once again browsing the DIY sites for storage and organization ideas. I *WILL* have neatness and organization!

Also, Chris and I are going out to dinner tonight. He actually asked if I wanted to go to Olive Garden, just the two of us.

I think this is our first "traditional date."

We've been married for six years. :P

I didn't realize this sort of thing was even a problem until I saw posts attacking the idea of the "fake geek girl" on Tumblr. I've been a nerd/geek/dork/dweeb/take your pick/all of the above ever since I can remember. I've been a reader since before I can remember, a Trekkie since Kindergarten and a hard-core Trekkie since sixth grade. But no one ever called me out as not being a real geek. Whether that's because I was reading whenever the teacher wasn't speaking and everyone could see that (one time in middle school I almost walked into a stop sign because I was reading on the way to school), or maybe I didn't register as "girl" to most of them because I was a short, fat, dumpy, big-boobs-were-the-only-thing-that-made-me-not-androgynous ugly geek first, or maybe because all that happened when I was in grade school--1989 to 2002--and being a geek wasn't the "cool" thing that it apparently is now.

That said, the myth of the "fake geek girl" is still out there, and it's still bullshit. And like these awesome folks, I've got nothing to prove.

After all, if I were into science fiction just to please my husband, I'd be a Star Wars fan. :P

Re-reading Stranger in a Strange Land twelve years or so after the first time I read it also made me realize how much I've learned since then. I certainly notice the sexism a lot more now than I did then (though I did see it then, I was born in the age of power suits after all). And the heterosexism that I didn't notice last time either. (And a bit of victim-blaming. Possibly trigger warning worthy, but I don't have any trauma triggers so I couldn't say for sure. Also an instance of the n-word.) The first time around I had only vague notions of queerness and was only starting to get used to the idea that I myself am queer. It was certainly a ground-breaking work in the sixties (and it's a big deal even now--there's a reason Billy Joel put it in "We Didn't Start The Fire," it really is thought-provoking), but boy oh boy can you tell that the author was a straight white cis-man born in 1907.

Good thing I've also learned how to be a fan of problematic things since the first read too. Especially since I still enjoy the book overall and have already bought the sequels (most of which I also have either not read yet or haven't read in over a decade). It'll be interesting to read them now, and then to re-read them a decade from now, and/or two or more. I read in Reader's Digest Quotable Quotes back in middle school a quote about going back to a place that remains unchanged to see how you yourself have altered, but the places I go back to always change between visits. I think that quote would do better with favorite books from childhood and/or adolescence. An unabridged copy will remain unchanged. And each time you read them you'll notice something you'd not noticed before, and you'll go into the book with more knowledge and experience than you did the last time.

(O hai, I'm pushing thirty and waxing philosophical verbose.)

I'm getting so much more out of Stranger in a Strange Land at 29 than I did at 17. (I just wish this version was the uncut version published after the author's death, but this version, the one published in the sixties, is still damned awesome and thought-provoking.)

Not dead.

I was mopey and not feeling like posting for the first half of last month, and from the 16th to the 30th I was back home in Florida for my brother's wedding (I wish I'd mustered the give-a-damn to write daily posts then, but that mopey not-giving-a-shit feeling hasn't gone away), and I've been back for a few days catching up on things like dishes and laundry and really getting into getting shit organized and throwing away stuff I don't want the movers to pack and hoping against hope that we won't be totally SOL when we get back to Florida once Chris ETSes because we didn't do enough ahead of time. So much that needs to be done and so much that can't be done from fucking New York.
